On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

Questionnaire
  1. How would you deal with a user who produced a steady stream of valuable answers, but tends to generate a large number of arguments/flags from comments?

Contact her/him in private to see if there's something that is bothering her/him and work from that point towards an attitude change. It may be dozens of reasons why users are flagging, so it is hard to describe exactly what I would do, but on one hand I always try to keep the valuable members who contributes to the content generation goal and, on the other hand, I always do what I have to do to maintain a healthy community, so if the user, at the end, is doing more harm than good, I will not hesitate to apply sanctions as needed.

  1. How would you handle a situation where another mod closed/deleted/etc. a question that you feel shouldn’t have been?

I first speak with him/her to understand the applied criteria on the decision. If I still disagree, I can talk my arguments contrary to the decision and see if that makes his/her mind change. If it doesn't I invite other moderator/s, if available, to weigh in the situation and accept what the majority of us decide. If there are no other moderators, I would seek help from a CM.

  1. In your opinion, what do moderators do?

Moderators do actions required to maintain the content of the site on topic and assist the community in maintaining a healthy relation between all members, speaking with problematic users and mediating in any confrontation that arises, but also applying disciplinary actions on users that show undesired behavior.

  1. A diamond will be attached to everything you say and have said in the past, including questions, answers and comments. Everything you will do will be seen under a different light. How do you feel about that?

I feel a sense of more responsibility over everything I do on the site, from publishing Questions, Answers and comments, to the new activities like responding to flags or taking actions to clean the site.

  1. In what way do you feel that being a moderator will make you more effective as opposed to simply reaching enough reputation to access moderator tools or become a trusted user?

Being a moderator, I could apply some actions immediately, like deleting SPAM or off-topic publications, without having to wait to other members of the community to detect and react to it.

  1. Which of your contributions to this meta site do you consider the best example of your moderator style?

I participate little in meta, so I don't have anything to show for now on this site, but I'm a seasoned StackExchange network user and I'm doing community moderation years before StackExchange formed.
