revised How can I know if a word or phrase should be avoided due to regional variations?
The original title question was off-topic for the StackExchange network. That first paragraph should be altered, too, but I'll leave that to you.

I almost asked a variation of this myself, but it seems like a list question to me. I don't think it's the right format for an SE network site. :\ (too bad, because I'm really interested, so +1! But, VtC.)

@hippietrail I agree. That's why I think this question should remain closed.

A taste of me probably would leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Yeah, that's why I left "letter 's'" in the title.

@hippietrail True, but without knowing the answer, it can be hard to ask a question, sometimes.

@LauraMoyàAlcover Yes, this is not a good question for the site. That's why it needs closed as off-topic. (However, there is benefit in having the question around and closed.) You should vote based on the usefulness, clarity, and research effort of the question, not on whether it's a good question for this site. (Granted, people generally vote however they want to, regardless of suggestions.)

@hippietrail There we go. ;) Fixed the question. You are right that the question itself wasn't quite specific enough. When I asked the question, I didn't know the answer enough to ask it correctly. Then I started researching and learned a bunch!

True, the OP did ask about the letter "s" rather than the "s" sound. However, I have a strong suspicion that the sound of the letter "s" is really what he was asking about, given that he used the word "pronounced". Great point, though!
