I think this is relevant - the "u" becoming silent is a rule, that's true, but it is a modification to the what "phonetic" means in the original question. Foreign speakers usually fall into this trap.

This is called a "wall to wall carpet" (alfombra muro a muro.) Carpet or rug are usually the same thing in spanish, except that "rug" may have more localized names.
